How to maximise your job search from home
If you’re on the lookout for a new job, the current situation affecting us all is sure to create challenges and change the way you approach your search. Our guide to maximising your job search from home offers useful tips to help you prepare and increase your chances of success.
Keep in touch: Our clients are still recruiting remotely for permanent positions and there are a number of temporary positions for frontline staff who are key to keeping the UK moving at this critical time. Kingsgate are still here on the other end of the phone to support you and our clients.
Maintain face to face contact: Even if you can’t meet in person, we are still available to speak to you via the many video apps that are available. Just let us know which applications you have access to (WhatsApp video, FaceTime, Zoom, Skype) and we will do our best to contact you. Our clients are still carrying out interviews using these applications so the recruitment process can keep moving throughout the restrictions.
Be flexible: Let us know that you are open to speaking face to face via video app. This will give you and potential employers an opportunity to meet and have a conversation that will enable you to get to know each other better than a telephone call.
Check your equipment and set the scene: When you have the opportunity to speak to a potential employer you need to prepare for the event. Test your Wi-Fi and stop any other activities like downloading or streaming before your interview starts. Ensure the applications are working and that you fully understand how to use them so you can share your screen and present documents where necessary. Just as important is your environment. The background for your virtual interview will give the employer an insight into you and your professionalism. Make sure the backdrop is clean, tidy and quiet with no distractions. Don’t move around and make sure that no one is likely to interrupt you. Also, make sure you’re dressed for the occasion. This is the first impression you will give to your potential employer and dressing well will also help you get into the right mind-set for your interview.
Be on time: this is always extremely important and being on time during video interview is particularly so to make sure everything is up and running as it should be before you start. Make sure everything is fully charged and you have a charger on hand should you need to plug in.
Do your research, prepare your questions and practice! As with a normal interview, make sure you are fully prepared with questions for your potential employer. Do your research and demonstrate your knowledge in the questions you ask. Practice your body language in front of the camera and play back how it would look to the interviewer. We’re here to help with guidance and advice on how to present yourself during your interview and some examples of what you can ask.
Get in touch with us to discuss your follow up: When you’ve finished your interview, get in touch and we can talk you through next steps. You can give feedback telling us how you think it went. We will then get in touch with the interviewer to get feedback for you and let you know what the next stage is going to be.
Stay Positive: In the current climate this is a big ask, but your ability to stay positive and see the light at the end of the tunnel will stand you in good stead when searching for your next role. Working towards a plausible solution will strengthen your frame of mind and help focus on getting past this difficult situation.
